I’m participating in a Run/Walk here in Chicago with Run for Congo Women (press release) on October 11, 2008 to help raise awareness and funds to help women in the Democratic Republic of Congo rebuild their lives after a war that’s claimed more lives than World War II.
5.8 million people have lost their lives and almost half of them were children under five. Women in Congo are targeted daily for sexual slavery, torture, and brutal gang rape. But despite this horrific violence, the situation in the Congo receives very little media coverage and many are not even aware that this conflict is even happening. Women and children as young as 3 (yes, 3) are being so routinely and violently raped that it’s really an epidemic. It’s a War Against Women.

“My husband was taken away to the bush by the Interahamwe soldiers. I am happy with the money you are sending me. I’m using $5 in selling charcoals and $3 on chickens I raise, as well as money for medical care. I’m making a profit of $2 through my activity. Lots of thanks to you.”
