Are you protecting YOUR business? Don’t let this happen to you
February 11, 2008 | 1 Comment
Before I set sail on my cruise I briefly mentioned that I’d be sharing some information with you about keeping your cash flowing no matter what company you’re promoting (or not promoting) and how to basically insure or protect your REAL business which is the relationships you build because that’s your true asset and that falls under You, Inc.
Most networkers mistakenly think that the company they’re building is their business when it’s not. It’s a vehicle but you or I don’t own it. We’re *independent* contractors and we receive 1099s.
Now, I’m saying that to say, sometimes unfortunate things happen in this industry. If you’ve been in this industry for any length of time, you already know this. Most of you are probably aware that some have even made a business out of selling geneology lists of companies that are either in trouble or have gone out of business.
Not only that but sometimes a company may do what’s in their best interest at the reps expense. Large 6-figure incomes can be slashed by 30, 40, 50% with payplan changes. Some organizations just downright stolen. Yes, it happens.
While on the ship I was having some great conversations with one of the women I dined with every night. She’s also an internet networker so we were talking about the different things we do online and one night she told me that a company she’d been building suspended her and took away her organization and income. Why?
Because she was marketing another company. Not cross-recruiting or doing anything unethical. Just marketing another product that she liked.
While I’ve been fortunate to where this has never happened to me, that really bothers me. In fact, it really burns me up! I don’t know about you but I got into free enterprise to BE FREE. Freedom is a CORE desire for me and sometimes these companies (not all companies) feel like they OWN you and what you’ve built just as if you were working a
J-O-B.
This can put you in a very vulnerable position.
I don’t work for anyone but Charise (and Najilah, Jair, & Zaniah – my 3 little ones). I don’t work for XYZ company. I “work” for Magnetic One Marketing. This is MY company. MY business. MY asset.
As Robert Kiyosaki says his Rich Dad always told him, “You’ve got to mind your OWN business.”
What I want to share with you is how you can do that by *Re-Branding* your opportunity so people are joining you and that relationship is established prior to them joining XYZ company.
In fact, you’ll have many more people that will want to be part of your ”inner circle” and use the same tools and resources you use but won’t necessarily be interested in joining XYZ company for whatever reason. They may not like the product or service or comp plan or maybe they’re already happy building another business. These contacts and relationships are very valuable.
First you absolutely have to have your own capture page and autoresponder system. If you’re simply sending referrals to a corporate site, you’re basically shooting yourself in the foot. At the very least, if you haven’t been doing this already, keep a database (address book) of people you network with. Think… RELATIONSHIPS. You could also start your own social community on Ning.com.
The real beauty here is that you build your NETWORK once and you continue to profit from those efforts even if something happens with the primary business you’re building. Hopefully, you’re never in a situation with a company that wants to act a fool. (Sorry, but you don’t know some of the stories I hear. Some of these companies really do *act a fool*).
Protect your cashflow and you can build your REAL business with more peace of mind and less fear.
To Freedom!
Charise Carter

Charise,
Great article. You’re right in everything you say.
